Gualala, one of our favorite camps ever: always in the running for the Metrodip Camp of the Year–I can’t quit you. This year, you surprised us with only having drive-in sites available, so we experienced you like never before. ✨
Site 16 could have been a major success or a major fail depending on the status of Site 15. Lucky for us, Site 15 was being held for emergency use only by the park, thus we got Site 16 with no neighbors. Site 16, mind you, is on a little lollipop at the end of the campground so we were not bothered by the camp circularations going around us, so TAKE HEED YE CAMPERS, it may be a good time that we had, but it can’t be guaranteed for all. ☝️
READ ON for more Things Learned and The GOODNESS.
The Goodness
- Wildlife: slugs, mice friends 🐁, racs 🦝 (but luckily, the camp across the way satisfied their raccing with 3 bags of chips and a loaf of bread; sorry other camp, but thanks for feeding the racs so they didn’t come after our stuff), day racs, quails
- Good weather yet again! Windy 21mph winds on the beach
- Beach hike, nobody got lost! 💪
- Gear updates:
- Osprey hiking backpack for baby, came as a hand-me-down, highly recommended; Phoebe was so comfortable she fell asleep in it 😴
- Ivan’s DIY fire starters made from dryer lint and empty toilet paper rolls 🧻
- Water jug died and need new for next time🚰
- Phoebe’s first walking camp was fun! She got to use her balance bike and picked up a lot of sticks.
- Neither Conrad nor Fifi stayed the night at CAMP COOLMOVES but they both participated in the festivities of hiking and crafting.
- Conrad brought us food from Oakland Chinatown for his day trip contribution. 🥡
- New camp badges for FIRE and COOLMOVES. 🎨
- COOL COOL COOL the GAME! Thanks Tamiko and Joe! 🙏
Food Achievements
- Schlorp of the greek variety: Greek Vegetable Stew
- Egg and veggie breakfast burritos with Lil’Smokeys
- Veggie and couscous mixture
- Homemade honey from Tamiko the Bee Keeper! 🍯
- Coconuts from Joe the Coconut Keeper! 🥥
Things Learned
- Forgot the baby’s high-chair and remembered that it would be useful when we were there, doh!
- Got a stake stuck into a tree root. Vexxed the camp for a long time. Finally removed. Some wear and tear to the hatchet. 🪓
- Still new at camping with baby. ⛺️👶 We’ve so far learned that it’s VERY HELPFUL if someone is willing to watch/distract the baby while we’re setting up/taking down camp instead of us trying to delegate tasks. Our well-oiled setup/teardown machine gets much derailed by baby, and having baby distraction assistance is so welcome! 🥰
- Got a birthday cake for Fifi: candles don’t like to stay lit in the wind! 🎂
- Tamiko gave a lot of interesting facts about bees from her Bee Keeping knowledge. One thing we learned is that when the bees sense a yellowjacket in the hive they kill it using a method called “balling.” 🐝
- Grocery store firewood was better than smoky campsite firewood. It’s that clean clean. 🪵
